Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign national citizen after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

The general requirements for administrative naturalization include:
(1) A period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States.
(2) Residence in a specific USCIS District before you file.
(3) The ability to read, write, and speak English.
(4) Knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.
(5) Good moral character.
(6) Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
(7) A favorable attitude toward the United States. All naturalization applicants must demonstrate good moral character, attachment, and a favorable disposition.

You may qualify to apply for naturalization if you are at least 18 years old and have held U.S. lawful permanent resident status for a minimum of 5 years; or for at least 3 years, provided that during that period you have been, and still are, married to and living with your U.S. citizen spouse (often described as gaining U.S. citizenship through a spouse or a U.S. citizen marriage); or if you are currently serving honorably in the U.S. military with at least 1 year of service, and you file for U.S. military citizenship while on active duty or within 6 months after separation.
